If you aren’t lucky enough to live in an area with in-season winter climbing, then the winter months are the perfect time to buckle down and do some serious training. However, if you want to ensure your hard work produces the best possible gains, then it is important to consider training strategies and make sure you are designing your training in a purposeful way.
To help you figure out your own winter training strategy, here’s an article by Alli Rainey in which she discusses her own training strategies and emphasizes the importance of prioritizing areas of weakness, but not to the point where you neglect maintaining your level in other areas.
“As I’ve mentioned before, my winter training season makes strength building a priority – but this doesn’t mean that I strength train in a void and stop training other relevant areas of climbing entirely. It simply means that I focus the lens of my training tightly on building sport-specific strength, and the other aspects are less important but are still in the frame of the picture, albeit a bit less in focus.” – Alli Rainey
In other words, Alli spends her winter focusing on climbing-specific strength training. However, while this may be the main focus of her winter sessions, she also mixes in power, power-endurance, and endurance sessions to ensure that she is not loosing ground in those areas in an effort to increase her strength levels.
