Kevin Jorgeson has been in the news a lot lately. For good reason! Kevin and Tommy Caldwell’s attempt up the Dawn Wall is inspiring and exciting and proves that hard work, training, dedication, and love for the sport really pay off.
Clearly, they are worth listening to when it comes to climbing technique and training. Here, in this article from climbing.com, Kevin writes about improving your climbing footwork.
As Kevin puts it:
“Nothing is more frustrating than falling because your foot slipped. It’s not frustrating because you passed the crux, were still fresh, or had just one move to finish your project. No, it’s frustrating because it’s preventable.”
Right?
Kevin uses a method of “Silent Feet” when training his climbing footwork….
“As your main points of weighted contact, your feet matter. Placing them silently forces you to be deliberate and aware with your choice, placement, and movement onto and off each foothold.”
In this article he talks about three different footwork techniques: the front step, instep, and backstep. He then describes how to use the Silent Feet method for each of them for training. He also includes three Silent Feet drills to hone your skills.
Check it out and learn how to improve your climbing footwork.
And good luck to those guys on the Dawn Wall!
