An unfortunate reality for many climbers is that they have way more motivation than they have time. While this can be frustrating as life constraints severely limit time spent climbing outside or even in the gym, this time away from climbing does not mean you have to loose your hard won gains. By performing some targeted climbing maintenance in the form of general fitness from home you may not make huge gains, but you can prevent yourself from having to start over again once you do have more time to climb.
To help you design your own climbing maintenance program, here’s an article by Cristina Lizarazo of Conquer the Crux that outlines 20 different exercises to help you stay as fit as possible from home.
“Not having time to climb is frustrating.”
“But, what’s arguably even worse, is not being able to enjoy those infrequent moments when you actually can make it to the gym or the crag because your climbing performance is well below your expectations.” – Cristina Lizarazo
The exercises described in the article are broken up by what muscles/body part they target. They range from basics like pull ups and dips to less common exercises like rubber band finger extensions and plank slides. One thing they almost all have in common is they require little to no equipment so they can quickly and easily be done anywhere.
Ultimately, while only training with these exercises will not have you sky rocketing through the climbing grades, as Cristina says they are definitely better than nothing and should keep you from loosing too much ground during periods away from climbing.
Additionally, even climbers with enough time to be more committed to climbing specific training may find adding some these exercises into their training beneficial as easy to perform mobility, flexibility, and injury prevention work.
