It seems like incorporating deadlifting and other power lifting into climbing training is a new trend that many top climbers and trainers are praising. While it may seem like your training energy could be better spent just climbing or hitting the campus board, this is not always the case. Deadlifts and other power lifts allow you to increase the intensity and apply and large enough load to really allow you to train strength.
To further make the case for lifting and for deadlifting in particular, here’s and article from Crux Crush by climbing trainer Galina Parfenov that takes you through how to properly deadlift and explains just why deadlifting can be such an effective lift for climbing training.
“Deadlifts strengthen the lower back muscles which will have a secondary benefit of improving overall lifting form in daily life! While I am a proponent of using all the compound lifts (bench press, press, deadlift, and even squat) as conditioning for climbing, I have found that deadlifts translate the most to climbing.” – Galina Parfenov
