Frequently Asked Questions

If you have other questions, please email Alex at alex@trainingbeta.com or call us at (650) 731-5615.

After you sign up to work with Alex, you’ll be sent an email with a link to an intake questionnaire. You’ll then be asked to make a Zoom appointment with Alex. If you signed up for the Initial Private Coaching Call or the Full Programming Package, she will get you your first training plan within one week of that call. You’ll get set up on the training app, TrueCoach, and from there you’ll have constant access to your training plan and be able to ask Alex questions through that.

Alex uses the app TrueCoach as her platform for her athletes. You’ll sign up for free as a user of TrueCoach and get the app on your phone or other device. She will create your training plan in TrueCoach and then you’ll be able to access it whenever and wherever you need it. The app facilitates constant contact between you and Alex, so you can ask her questions and get feedback or encouragement whenever you need it.

While Alex loves to work with any and all climbers who have strong goals, she specializes in breaking through plateaus, injury prevention, competitive youth athletes, and shorter climbers.

The ideal climbing training setup is a steep bouldering wall, a hangboard with the ability to adjust the load (a pulley system or whatnot), weights/kettlebells, and gymnastic rings/TRX. That being said, you can definitely get by with less. It’s just not as ideal.

If you are currently injured, Alex can try to work around your injury, but it really depends on the individual injury and the severity of the injury. Injuries will have to be discussed on a case by case basis. Feel free to email alex@trainingbeta.com if you’re not sure if your situation is a good fit.

As climbers, we shouldn’t be thinking of training as a path to quick gain. Long-term development as a climber is much more important, and that’s why Alex likes to work with athletes over at least 2 months. However, even with a more long-term focus, climbers, especially those without an extensive training background, can start to see results in as little as a couple weeks.

No, not at all! If this is the first time you’ve focused much on your training, it’s actually great to have someone guide you through it so you’re not just guessing about what to do. Alex will work with you no matter what your experience with training is.

About Your Coach, Alex Stiger

Alex Stiger is a dedicated sport climber and boulderer who lives in Longmont, Colorado. She is a Certified Personal Trainer, Sports Performance Coach, and TRX certified.

Alex was Head Coach of 2 climbing gyms for 7 years. She has worked extensively with youth climbers of all ages and levels, from beginners to national level athletes climbing V12+, as well as adult climbers, from beginners up to professional climbers. Alex loves to be coached herself and is constantly trying to learn more and perfect her craft as a coach and as a climber.

As a shorter climber, just shy of 5 feet tall, she has had to rely on progressive and accurate training programs, unlocking mental blocks, and a high level of motivation to climb her current hardest send of 5.14a. She brings this wisdom and experience to every one of her clients.

Alex is also an avid chess player, a long-time equestrian enthusiast, and a former breakdancer. Never satisfied to sit around idly, she’s constantly doing and learning. You can find her most weekends–weather permitting–in Rifle with her partner Luke and dog Milly.

Testimonials

Alex provided exactly the direction that I was looking for…

I had a 75-minute consultation with Alex and came out of the session feeling like I had new direction and focus in my climbing training, which was exactly what I was looking for. Having done most of my climbing and training indoors prior to COVID, the shift to mostly outdoor climbing left me uncertain about what to focus on and how to continue progressing. Alex and I had a session that combined video assessment with constructing a training plan that fit my needs.

Alex came into the session with two specific observations from my videos, which were immediately actionable and trainable. Working off of these observations, along with discussion about my training history, we outlined an appropriate training plan and Alex even followed up after the call with specific exercise routine recommendations. She also suggested some grade benchmarks for me to be working towards by the end of the year, which have already started influencing the projects that I’m choosing to work on. Alex provided exactly the direction that I was looking for, and was also just so friendly and easy to talk to. I hope to work together again soon!

Alex challenges me on every level…

I’m older and have 25+ years of climbing under my belt and can I just say…….I LOVE training with Alex! We have been working together regularly now for the past 6 months.

Where my challenges with climbing have been mostly mental, through working with Alex, not only has this improved greatly and my climbing has improved, but my overall fitness is at a level that I have not seen in quite a while. I also love that Alex challenges me on every level. She knows what I don’t wanna do/my weaknesses and makes me do it and now I am actually beginning to like what I sucked at :))))). Highly recommend.

Five stars…

Alex took me from a 5.9 flatlander to a personal best of 5.12b in a year. She combines a bright positive personality with a tyrannical coaching mentality that makes you feel good, even as she pushes you beyond where you thought you could go. Five stars.

Podcast Episodes with Alex

How to Stay Motivated in Climbing

One of Alex’s superpowers is staying psyched 80+ % of the time, and we discuss how she does that and how she guides her clients to do the same.

  • Should training be torture??
  • Why is that concept so romanticized?
  • Why do we treat climbing and training like two separate things?
  • How did old school mentalities shape how we are approaching our sport today?
  • How can we stop believing that doing things we don’t want to do will make us better?
  • How did our childhood sports and gym class shape the way we think about climbing and training?
