Different types of climbing have different physical demands. As a result, you should train differently depending on what type of climbing you are training for. For example, only focusing on power may work for bouldering, but won’t get you up long endurance sport climbs. This need to train for the specific demands of a type of climbing is even more pronounced when it comes to training for alpine climbing. Unlike days spent at the sport crag or boulders, days spent alpine climbing require a high level of stamina and fitness to allow you to continually move in the mountains.
To help you train more effectively for alpine climbing, here’s an article from Climbing Magazine that outlines a 7-week training program designed by coach and Mountain Athlete founder Rob Shaul to have you ready for long, hard days in the mountains.
“Steep approaches, weighty loads, and full days make climbing in the alpine a serious affair. Likewise, climbers with big alpine goals should take their training seriously.” – Rob Shaul
The article lays out all seven weeks of the program in an easy to follow format including a video that demonstrations of all the exercises. The schedule consists of five training days per week with all but one of the workouts lasting between 60 and 90 minutes. The fifth training day consists of a mini-event designed to simulate longer days and will last 3+ hours.
