Are you on a training program with a schedule? How strict is it? Does it allow you to re-order days to account for better conditions outdoors? How about taking extra time off if you feel tired or run down? While everyone is different and may require more time off to recover, the important question to ask yourself is are you on a training program designed with your goals in mind and do you have enough mental discipline to stick to it?
Here’s an article by Cody Grodzki that highlights the importance of discipline in training. In the article Grodzki describes climbing trainer Adam Macke’s training program which has allowed him to consistently increase his bouldering level by one V-grade a year and his sport climbing by two letter grades each year.
Clearly, these kind of gains are enticing. However, they are not free and sticking to this program requires a serious amount of mental discipline. As Grodski describes, for Macke’s program to work everyday is planned out with a specific workout that must be done in the correct order and cannot be skipped.
“In short, this plan does not allow for any changes or alterations. Ever.”
“Yes, seriously.”
“Still intrigued about transitioning from your old plan to Macke’s? It is easy enough to explain, but rather difficult to follow. The individual must stay on the program’s track to gain the full benefit of the science behind it, regardless of seasonality, weather, climber fatigue, emotions, climbing trips, or even your parents coming into town for the weekend.” – Cody Grodzki
